What did you read this weekend?

No matter how big our TBR lists get, we’re always looking for more great books to read! We’ll share with you if you share with us!!

Here’s what we’re reading here at the Book Hookup…
Dante's Girl CoverAna: I read Dante’s Girl (The Paradise Diaries) by Courtney Cole.  This contemporary romance is a departure from the books in Courtney’s wonderful Bloodstone and Moonstone series, but it’s a great new direction.  This is one of those books that once you start, you’ve got to finish it (as evidenced by the dark circles under my eyes) because the story touches your heart.  Reese, the main character is spunky and has some wonderful internal monologues…our hero, Dante, is definitely swoon-worthy…and their situation, although not a new one as far as books go, sucks you in and makes you remember how your heart beats at double-time because of first love.  Be on the lookout for my review…it’s coming soon!!
Celeste: I am reading The Selection (The Selection #1) by Kiera Cass. This book was a gift to me from my friend, the very lovely Michelle, who was kind enough to send me a signed copy!! (see pic). So far some parts remind me of the tv reality show The Bachelor, but this is a dystopian novel so I’m assuming there are lots of twists and turns are around the corner. The setting for this novel is a caste system with very distinct levels in society. Our heroine, America Singer, is on the lower end, but now has the chance of a lifetime to move up.  I’m already a little heartbroken and get the feeling a fab romance is in store. I can’t wait to see what happens!
Christina: I just started Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. When I first heard about this novel, it was being proclaimed as the Young Adult version of Game of Thrones. Having read the first book and seeing the entire first series of Game and Thrones and enjoying the debauchery in both, I was all over this book. Luckily, Net Galley allowed me to few this title (I was so excited about it, too.). This is about 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien who has been imprisoned, expected to serve her time doing hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier. Her crime? Only being the most kickass assassin ever. (Seriously, how much does that rock?!) So imagine her surprise when she’s dragged from the mines and lands at the feet of the Crown Prince. Furthermore, Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. I haven’t gotten very far into it yet, but with the blurb that promises battles, corruption, and possible romance, what is there not to love?
…so what did you read? We’d love to know :)

I finished reading what a boy wants and unenchanted and now i’m reading fairest. Love the fairy tale books with a twist. :)

  2. Well I’ve been multi-reading! I can’t seem to help myself but read several at the same time. So here’s what I’ve been dipping into: Indebted by Amy A. Bartol, The Goddess Legacy by Aimee Carter, The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson and The Greatest Love Story of All Time by Lucy Robinson

    • Those are AWESOME series. Thank you so much for stopping by :) I’m a huge Aimee Carter and Amy Bartol fan! I have Name of the Star on my list but haven’t quite gotten to it yet. How do you like it so far?

    • Wow, I don’t know if I could dip into that many books at one time. You are a rock star! I’d intermingle the storylines and characters too much, I believe, everything would get muddled.

  3. I read another book from Courtney Cole, Soul Kissed. Loved it! Looking forward to reading Soul Bound soon. :)

    • I still have to get to those books, Ana has raved about them too! They sound right up my alley, I love Mythology.

    • Yes! I love Courtney’s books. Both her series (Moonstone and Bloodstone) are great! This new book is a definite departure from the mythology but it’s a fun summer read!

  4. Currently reading “The Way of Kings” by Brandon Sanderson.

    • Clearly I missed that one. It gets huge fabulous reviews!! I’m just starting to get into fantasy books so I will def. add that to my list. Thanks for the rec!

I read Shatter Me and Wishing for Someday Soon

    • Shatter Me! Be still my heart…one of my faves this past year… soooo good! Did u like?? xoxo

    • LOVED Shatter Me! I’m so excited for the novella. I may or may not have a soft spot for Warner.

    • First off, I LOVE Shatter Me. I wouldn’t kick Adam nor Warner out of my bed. I’m just sayin’.

As for Wishing for Someday Soon, I’ve seen it several times, and I always click on it because the cover makes me think of road-trip swoons. Then I’ll read the summary and get heart-kicked. Can you tell me if the abuse is alluded to or if it actually written about? I’m not sure this is one I could handle.

It is detailed a bit and I did choke back a sob at one point, but it isn’t overly graphic. It is a sweet story, but yet, it is sad.

  6. I am so excited to hear about your Selection experience…yes The Bachelor meets Cinderella is what so many people are “tagging” it…I flove you and hope you enjoy this guilty pleasure as much as I did! xoxo

    • I have to say, Michelle. I want to do bad things with Maxon. Very bad. He is powerful, sophisticated, funny, gorgeous and then some. I will be done tonight and get back to you with my full report! 😉

  7. Celeste…I’m jealous of your autographed copy of The Selection…just thought you’d want to know that!! 😉
