We are obsessed with Kai Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins. Ana reviewed it a while back (here), but since then has gotten Celeste and Jag hooked on the series and this bad boy as well. Here you will find a casual chat about the book, lots of quotes, and plenty of spoilers so beware if you haven’t read yet!
First Thoughts:
Jag: I can honestly say I haven’t been this drawn to a book in ages. It was like the pull I had with Twilight and we all know how craycray that was lol
Celeste: OMG. Wow. This is serious.
Ana: My first thought was this was an original take on nephilim stories
Celeste: It really was original – I didn’t even know it was about angels and demons at first. It was dark, gritty, intense…and hot.
Ana: Exactly…they’re meant to lead humans into sin rather than help them be “good”…amazing premise!
Celeste: I loved the 7 sins. (I forget them all now) but totally original!
Jag: I haven’t read a lot of angel books but loved the idea of the deadly sins
Celeste: When I found out Kai was the son of the Duke of Lust —> I’m freaking in
Ana: Yes!! Of all the sins…come on, that’s the hottest one!
Jag: I love how the author creates so much angst and she doesn’t rely on the typical love triangle
Celeste: I hate triangles
Ana: I love that she creates the angst not by a triangle but by how different Anna and Kai are
Jag: EXACTLY!
The Situation Explained by Kai:
“Because it would be best for you to have a healthy fear of me so you can’t say you weren’t warned. I’m not like boys at your school. Think of the pull you feel toward drugs. That is how I feel about sex.”
Oh.
“Starting to get it now? Let me be even clearer.” His voice lowered as he walked me through his work. “I can feel out someone within five minutes of conversation to know what I would have to say and do to lure her into bed. That includes you, though I admit I was off my game last night. With some people it’s a matter of simple flattery and attention. With others it takes more time and energy. I do whatever it takes to get their clothes off, and then I attempt to make it so they’ll never be with another person and not think of me. I know secrets of the human body most people don’t’ even know about themselves. And when I leave, I know they’re ruined why they’re begging me to stay.”

Ana: GAH GAH GAH
Celeste: *holds heart* It’s his job to have sex. Gulp.
Anna:
Ana: I think she HAD to make Anna so innocent to make it work
Celeste: I do too. I loved her inner dialogue.
Jag: true
Anna’s innocence:
“I wish I could have talked with him longer. I wondered how I could get hold of him.
I supposed I could attach my phone number to a pair of my undies and throw them onstage at his next show. The thought actually made me laugh out loud. He’d probably take one look at the white cotton panties and chuck them in the trash.”
“Seriously,” I whispered, unable to look away. “You’re doing the bedroom-eyes thing again.”
Anna being lol:
“Wait,” he said, the threat of a smile on his face. “Does that mean you feel lustful every time somebody near you feels it?”
“No, pervo. It’s not like that-it’s more like an unsatisfied longing for someone. It’s uncomfortable.”
Celeste: I totally laughed to myself that she calls him pervo.
Jag: heehee she’s really funny
Ana: pervo! awesome!!
Anna’s reaction to Kai is undeniable:
“I felt you come alive when we kissed, and I know you’re afraid of that. Afraid to unleash that other side of yourself. ”
Kai:
Celeste: His confidence made him sooooo appealing
He kept a straight face, and his tone was seductively low. “there’s hardly any room for fear when you’re so bloody turned-on.”
Ana: Oh ya…for sure!!
Jag: GAH!
“Dear God!
I screamed and buried my face in my pillow.
“What?!” I heard him ask. “Did you see a roach?”
“Why are you naked?!” I did not dare to lift my red face.
“Huh. Is that all?” he asked. “I always sleep in the buff. I don’t know how you can stand all that clothing.”
Jag: Killing me Kai-ndly lol
Celeste: lol. I cracked up at that and had a fab visual too
Ana: Poor guy, he couldn’t help himself…he was just sexy by nature!! lol
“You’re too embarrassed to say it. Sex. Go ahead, give it a go. Sexsexsex.”
Jag: It was his norm *sigh*
Celeste: He freaking ooozed sex
Ana: The musician and English accent thing didn’t hurt either!!
Poor Kai (j/k):
Jag: I still wonder how Kai can keep you know doing what he’s doing….given how he feels.
Celeste: He did say it was harder but he kept going.
Jag: I need to get in his head more.
Ana: I think he feels trapped by his situation.
Let’s get back to cocky Kai:
“So that’s it, then?” he asked. I ignored him. “I always wondered what it would feel like.”
That made me curious enough to turn to him.
“What what would feel like?” I asked.
“Rejection.” He seemed in the midst of a revelation.
“What are you saying? That no girl has ever told you no?”
“Not one.”
Well, that explained a lot.”
Ana: I know!!
Celeste: He is a sex machine!!! *fans self*
Ana: No one ever rejected him! dang!!
Celeste: Except Anna!
Ana: She says it right in the beginning…
“Good gracious, he was sexy—a word that had not existed in my personal vocabulary until that moCelestent. This guy was sexy like it was his job or something.”
Ana: And in a twist of fate…it turns out that it was his job!!!
Jag: erm that was so hott. I swooned
“Now would be the time to stop me, luv. You’re about to be undressed, and trust me when I say it will be too later after that.”
Celeste: YES YES YES YES YES. That is my fave line of the whole book. When he calls her luv. I wanna do bad bad things
Ana: shivers!
Jag: *sings* I wanna do bad things to you.
Celeste: oooh. Now I’m thinking of Alexander Skarsgard.
The Romance:
Celeste: Their romance was forbidden and that made it more delicious. like punishable by death?!? eek!
Ana: HOTT chemistry.
Jag: The chemistry was off the hook. He had a ‘job’ to do. I always wondered what he felt like having to go out there night after night.
Ana: Yes…he had never allowed himself to feel anything for anyone and was as surprised as we were that he’d fall so quickly for this girl.
Celeste: He was curious at first, but the chemistry and attraction was real.
Jag: Do you think it was so intense because it was forbidden? He could have sex everyday several times, a guys dream but not his.
Ana: Yes…that and the fact that they were so different. He was totally experienced and she was innocent.
The range of emotions and Jag gets her soul restored:
Ana: I think the reason I loved this book was that I went through the full range of feelings…ALL THE FEELINGS!!!
Celeste: yes ALL!
Jag: #truth
Celeste: I felt depressed with her when she was down and I loved how her mom supported her.
Ana: yes…a good mom for a change!
Jag: awesome mom
Jag: I cried, I NEVER cry, I have no soul lol.
Celeste: there’s the soul!
Ana: lol…maybe this gave you back your soul!
Jag: HEADLINE Sweet Evil restores Soul lol
Celeste: She truly loved Kai
“A vibrant energy rushed through my body as the pieces slammed into place. Oh, dear Lord. I was in love with him. And there wasn’t a thing on earth, in heaven, or in hell that could have stopped me.”
Ana: The postcard, the phone number…ugh…makes me misty just thinking about it!!
Celeste: wahhhhh and the necklace
Jag: stop, I’m tearing up the postcard
Kope:
Celeste: I don’t think I’m a fan of Kope
Ana: I think Kope is going to be trouble in Sweet Peril. I felt bad for him, but he was a bit of a creeper
Celeste: He’s got an agenda. I’m convinced!
Jag: I liked Kope, I’m interested to see where he goes in SP
Celeste: I believe they go off together. barf.
Ana: I’m afraid he’ll be the dreaded triangle
Celeste: Didn’t Kai say he was “one step away from a celibate monk”
Ana: Yes he did…but a boy can change! lol
Jag: For a girl
Celeste: I think the triangle will be avoided by a hair. But it will be put out there.
Jag: Hey if Kai is out of the picture then…
Celeste: Noooooo, no triangle, is just a little tryst is ok for you?
Ana: I don’t think I’d like a triangle, but they could become good friends! And you know that Kai is keeping an eye on her no matter where he is. He wouldn’t stand for Kope moving in on his girl! I hope!!
Celeste: Kai will reappear. I’m convinced.
Kai’s Dad:
Ana: His father is a piece of work!!
Celeste: His dad is an ass!
Jag: arg he freaks me out. The fact that he can smell you know…vcards.
Celeste: creepy older dude for sure
Ana: ick!
Celeste: He is also very scary. scary and creepy
Jag: I can honestly say I have no idea where this is all going
Ana: Yes…he’s not the kind to give Kai a pass, even on creepy stuff so Kai is trapped
Jay:
Jay and Anna:
“Maybe he’s just one of those players who won’t let himself get too close to anybody,” Jay theorized.
”Yeah,” I said. “Or maybe he’s got some serious daddy issues.”
Jay laughed at that.
I wished I were joking.”
Ana: Yes…he’s the one who took her to the concert where she saw Kai, right?
Celeste: Yes, he was very supportive. and his aura was only friendship…except one time quickly when she showed some leg or something. It was funny.
Ana: He was so nervous and excited to meet Kai’s band and go backstage…totally fangirling…or is fanboying a word?!? lol
Jag: He’s a nice guy, its cool to see a guy in ‘friend’ role who isn’t secretly in love with the female lead.
Ana: Yes, definitely refreshing! He added the needed levity and he was an awesome friend!
Celeste: A huge pet peeve is the dumb bff.
Ana’s Dad
Jag: Let’s talk about her dad
Ana: I actually liked that her father had a soft spot for her even though he’s this “evil” guy
Jag: Me too! He seems to really care about her but he can’t be open about it and he still has to make her do tough things
Celeste: how did he not get out of prison?
Jag: ya lets just suspend our belief on that lol. The scenes where he ‘preps’ her for her job, and later we find out Kope was ‘listening’
Celeste: Yah, i just accepted it didn’t flow.
The ending:
Jag: Its been weeks since I read it and I still think about the end. It KILLS ME.
Celeste: It was very very sad.
Ana: Yes…heartbreaking
Hopes for book 2:
Ana: I can’t wait for the next book. There’s so much that can happen and so many possibilities for Kai and Anna…makes me nervous, anxious, scared! lol
Jag: I always fear the middle book lol
Celeste: I hope I can relax and read it, but I’m scared too. I’m going to blow through the pages. If Kai is missing and it’s a Kope book Imma cry. There has to be a reunion. HAS TO.
Jag: ARG NEW MOON ALL OVER AGAIN lol
Celeste: Word. exactly what I was thinking
Ana: yes…I read too fast when I’m anxious and just like book 2 in Twilight…if this is a Kope book I’ll freak out! *chants* we will see Kai…we will see Kai…

I absolutely loved this.
Although the author did mention that it wouldn’t be a love triangle. She doesn’t like them herself but her publisher wanted one or something like that so instead of adding one she just added some chemistry between Kope and Anna.
Okay.. now I am thinking.. what if Kope DOES have a secret agenda……
and I was also glad about the Jay being a best friend who wasn’t secretly in love.
Who knows what Kope will do in the second book?!?! All we know is that we’re team Kai all the way!! Thanks for the comment!
