Today we’re very excited to welcome
a guest to The Book Hookup…
The next book in the series, Crest, is
coming in September and we thought
we’d grab Julian before he gets too busy!
Hi Julian! Thanks so much for agreeing to speak with us here at the Book Hookup. Please have a seat…can we get you a drink?
Thank you. Very happy to be here.
Leans back in chair and slowly smiles.
And I’d love an Absolut on the rocks.
Ice tinkles against glass.
So, tell us a little about yourself…
We’ve heard people refer to you as too confident, too cocky. We’re perfectly fine with that but what do you think about being perceived that way?
It’s not worth worrying about. I can’t control what others think of me and I don’t really care. Life’s too short to waste on things like approval or conforming to other people’s expectations.
Takes a sip. Besides, being likable usually equates to being boring.
How has being a chevalier shaped your life?
It’s a rush. It’s one of the few things that make me feel alive. The adrenaline of a fight, that fine balance I have to walk when I go on a risky undercover mission.
Fear keeps you on the edge, you know? It makes life sharp. Vivid.
Being a chevalier also pisses my family off and that’s always a plus. Winks.
We’re curious about your relationship with Tristan. It’s definitely complicated. Tell us what you really think about him (we won’t tell!).
Warrior Prince. Scoffs. Mr. Dull and Perfect. Everything is always about the rules, duty, and obligations. His Highness thinks he’s better than everyone else. All the selkies are like that.
Do you get along with him?
Shrugs. As long as he stays out of my way and doesn’t try to give me orders.
What about Kendra? Describe her for us in your own words.
Studies his drink.
It’s difficult to describe her because I’ve never really experienced anything like it.
She’s like that first drop of coffee you have in the morning when your mind is still sluggish and dull.
Because when she’s around, everything is different. A jolt races through your veins and the world comes alive.
Colors are brighter, your senses are sharper, and your mind and body awakens.
Puts down his drink. And she makes me laugh…she’s the first person that really makes me laugh.
You’ve sometimes shown an instinctive understanding of how she thinks and what she’ll do next. Do you feel like you know her well?
Eyes turn thoughtful.
Haverleau and elemental society are cages. So many rules, roles, duties. They shoved the war and prophecy on to Kendra and locked her in with it.
I know how she thinks because we’re both outsiders in our world. We’re meant to be free among humans.
How has meeting her changed you?
Things that used to be enough, no longer are. My work, human females, books, art, and poetry…all of it. They don’t take away the numb boredom.
It has to be her.
But you still haven’t openly stated how you feel. Why not fight for her?
Eyes cool. Who says I’m not?
Takes a sip. When you work undercover, the first thing you learn is how to be flexible and improvise.
There’s always a moment that shifts everything. That moment hasn’t arrived yet. But it will.
You mean when Emma finally let me tell my own story? It took me months of persuasion to get her to do it.
In Chevalier, we meet Renee Bessette, a friend of yours. Can you tell us about her?
I’ve been friends with Renee since we were kids. She’s a talented artist, a little wild, definitely tough. I’m working with her a lot now so I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about her soon from Kendra.
Do they get along?
Chuckles. No. They’re way too similar to get along.
What do you dream about? What would be your perfect future?
I’d love to live in Paris, spend my days at museums, bookstores, and cafes. Enjoy great food and music. Go skydiving, snowboarding, rock climbing. Live freely without rules or conditions.
Emma won’t share with us what’s going to happen next! Is there anything you can tell us about what happens in book 3?
She told me before I came here that if I opened my mouth, she’d write me out of the fourth book. Sorry, ladies, but my life has to come first on this one.
Thank you for being so candid with us Julian. We hope you’ll come visit us again soon!
With such beautiful women? Please. Smiles. The pleasure was all mine.
*the litbrarians blush*
**And a quick note from Emma: Many, many thanks to Ana and The Book Hookup for inviting Julian over today!** It was our pleasure Emma!! Ana whispers to Emma…”can we keep him…please??”…big hopeful grin*
About the Book:
Illusion. Power. Identity.
Tensions are reaching a fever pitch everywhere Kendra Irisavie turns.
Darkness settles over elementals as a new threat stirs suspicions of a betrayal from within.
Details of recent events spread through Haverleau, prompting doubts over Irisavie leadership. The mysterious Selkie Kingdom finally opens its doors, but the gesture only fans the flames of division. And despite the perils involved, Kendra finds it difficult to ignore the demands of her heart.
As the body count rises, pressure also grows to shift the tides of war. The sondaleur is on the hunt, but tracking the Aquidae leader is the greatest challenge she’s ever faced. With the Shadow playing a deadly game of obsession and horror, Kendra’s best chance to win is to unravel a tangled web of deception spanning back to the origins of the elemental world.
Nothing is what it seems and the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her pursuit for answers becomes.
When the unthinkable happens, Kendra must decide if survival is worth the sacrifice.
Conflicting loyalties, fierce passions, and irrevocable choices ignite in the electrifying third installment of the Ondine Quartet.
