Title: Broken and Screwed, #1
Series: The BS Series
Published: February 7th, 2013 – Self Published
Story Synopsis: Alexandra’s older brother died the night he graduated. That day changed everything for her. No longer was she the party girl. No longer did she care about being popular and no longer was her family the happy unit she always thought existed. The only person who could help her heal is the same person who loved her brother as much as she did, his best friend. She only hopes to keep her entire heart from breaking when Jesse will move on, and she knows he will.
After Ethan died, Jesse excelled at basketball, partying, and girls. He used it all to turn his emotions off, but the irony was that Alex was the only person who could do that for him. She helped him forget, but she was the one person he shouldn’t be with because the secrets he knows could shatter everything. They could shatter her.
Broken and Screwed is going on our top shelf!
Amy: Actual rating of 4.5 stars! WOW. Alright.. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately.. Everything I’ve picked up just all seems to blend together.. same plot, same drama, every dude’s a bad boy now.. Blah. And then I started Broken and Screwed.. SLUMP. OVER! Holy friggin’ bookmarks this was an awesome, AWESOME story!
Celeste: 5 flailing stars! Holy….what was that? I am speechless. Tijan hit that one out of the ball park. This book was everything I love and want in a story.
Amy: I finished this book off in about 4 hours one night because I HAD to find out what happened! Couldn’t put it down.. Oh yeah. It was that good!
There was certain darkness to this story that was oddly refreshing if that makes any sense at all.. The plot is pretty straightforward and predictable
(until the end.. OMG!), yet it’s interwoven with all of these complexities, intense feelings, and unfortunate circumstances that gives this story a uniqueness all it’s own. The pacing was seriously perfect. Everything happened at just the right time and had me an anxious, swooning, heart-clenching mess throughout the entire book. Hold onto your emotions because you’re in for a ride with this series!
Celeste: Like Amy, I read this book in one night. I could not put it down. Could. Not. This was a serious page turner, and although sometimes months went by, it was done just right. There is some serious heartache in this book. Alex’s brother, Ethan, died the night of his graduation, and it tore her family apart. It also destroyed Ethan’s best friend, Jesse. Now the only time Alex and Jesse find peace is when they are together, but it can’t work, and it won’t last. There are so many secrets in this book, and I don’t even think we know a fraction of them. Tijan writes in a way that sucks you into this world. It was so real, so intense, and so upsetting. I really felt like I became Alex, and that was amazing.
The Characters and Relationships..
Amy: Jesse Hunt is one bad dude.
Finally.. Halleluiah! He’s the kind of character whose actions and behavior makes you literally want to cringe, scream, cry and attack him sexy style all at the same time. He’s a damaged, insensitive asshole that takes what he needs, when he needs it then he’ll bust your pride, self esteem and hope into a million pieces and walk away. That’s just who he is. But there’s one girl he can’t completely walk away from and that girl happens to be his dead best friend’s younger sister..
Alex is quite simply broken. There were times in this book when I had a hard time reading through all the heartbreak in this poor girls life. After her brother Ethan died, she lost herself.. and the person she was. Her parents, the only family she had left, abandoned her, the only child they had left, as they struggled to live in a world without their son. Jesse was Ethan’s best friend, and Alex loved him from the very beginning. He was the only one that could ever dull the pain.. even if it was temporary.
Now, the romance between these two is far from romantic.. Actually, as you first begin the story, I wouldn’t even refer to it as romance at all. I’m fairly certain you’ll have a similar reaction to my own over Jesse’s awfulness towards Alex and Alex’s’ weakness for taking it, which may or may not have included a time out or two and a whole lotta f-bombs and other choice words.. Their relationship, even when it was just as friends, is complex, confusing and constantly surrounded by darkness. But, there is also something curiously palpable too.. something different you can feel between the characters that makes you ignore all the bad stuff. The connection between Jesse and Alex is indescribable (in both good and bad ways) and their chemistry is emotionally and physically explosive. And because of the complicated nature of story, the intimate scenes have an even bigger impact than they normally would.
As for the other characters, some I loved, some I didn’t. There were so many secondary characters to keep track of.. it was confusing and a little bit overwhelming, which was why I had to knock my rating for this book down 1/2 a star. I just felt like the same kind of effectiveness within the storyline could of been had with a few less people involved. I’m sure the author has her reasonings, but that’s just my opinion..
Celeste: I still feel slightly speechless so I hope I can do both Jesse and Alex justice. The story is told from Alex’s POV, so I definitely got to know her better than Jesse. Oh man, she has it tough. Not only did she lose her brother, but her family fell apart and now it seems like her parents have given up. I cried for how lonely she was. She was like a zombie, but to me still held it together more than I could have….and I think that is owed to Jesse. But he also was only holding on because of Alex. While they won’t commit to each other, knowing the other one is out there really does give them some peace. Jesse has some secrets, but that is part of his appeal. He is tight lipped, brooding, and one sexy mother f*cker. He turns on and off with the flick of a switch, but it was so obvious he cared so deeply for Alex. Yes, they have sex in this book and it’s not overly detailed…but it is so raw and desperate. I’m serious, the emotions came flying out of the pages and I couldn’t get enough. The force holding Jesse and Alex apart is so painful, but honestly, that is what made this story so delicious, and seriously epic.
Amy: The ending.. AKA a cliffhanger of epic portions, nearly killed me! So many unanswered questions.. It was brutal! Thankfully, Broken and Screwed #2 was already loaded and ready to go on my Kindle or I would of
stroked out cried. But that aside, I’m truly so impressed with the authors writing and the way she constructed this beautifully dark story. It was a totally addictive, completely captivating and overall fantastic read, and I’m really looking forward to checking out all of her other series!
Oh, and p.s., Tijan, if I’m lucky enough for you to see this review.. Could you please, please, PLEASE give us a chapter/scene/paragraph/whole book from Jesse’s point of view?
OMG PLEASE! I need it! Loved your book! PLEASE! ♥
Celeste: It’s official: Broken and Screwed is going on my all time favorites list. I can’t even imagine where this story is going, and am seriously restraining myself from starting book 2 this very second. I love angsty romances, and especially dark and gritty ones. This was all that and more. I feel like a kid at Christmas and now can’t wait to read every single book and story Tijan has written. Yes, that is how much I loved this. Hope you love it as much as I did, let me know what you think!
