Title: Vampire Academy
Author: Richelle Mead
Series: Vampire Academy
Publisher: Penguin Publishing
First Line: “I felt her fear before I heard her screams.”
From the Publisher: St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.
I give Vampire Academy 4 HOTTIES and 1 washboard stomach
My Review: So it was one of those nights, staring at the titles on my kindle, picking a book, reading a chapter & realizing I just wasn’t in the mood for that particular read. Frustrated I made my way to Vampire Academy, with an eye roll, I opened up the e-book and started reading. Before I knew it, I was 20% into the book and thoroughly enjoying myself. I totally expected YA cheese here and what I was given was well written characters I cared about and admired, a plot with twists and turns and a few forbidden hotties. WIN!
Lissa and Rose are longtime best friends ‘connected’ by a tragic family accident. Lissa, the sweet and sensitive Royal Moroi vampire and Rose her tough impulsive Dhampir Guardian. When the book opens we find them on the run…but from who, from what and why? When they are captured by the handsome God-like Guardian Dimitri, they are ushered back to St Vladimir’s academy and slowly the answers to all of these questions start to reveal themselves.
This book is action packed from page one, I love when an author dives right in to the heart of the story. The book is extremely well written and throughout the storyline, most of the most pressing questions get answered. The author’s well-paced revelations keep the pace of the plot steady and exciting, no skimming for me and no re-reading because too much is dropped at once (arg I find that frustrating).
The adventures were exciting but it was the characters that made this book such a great read for me. Lissa and Rose are such opposites in so many ways but it balances them out so well. I loved Lissa for her gentle emphatic ways and Rose for her fierce protective reckless nature. Every great book needs some hotties, enter the ‘perfect’ boy, the hot affected dood on the ‘fringe’ and the older ‘forbidden unattainable’ hottie. I’ll leave you with that thought to ponder *RAWR*
I’m almost done the second book in this series FROSTBITE and I can tell you it’s just as great as the first one. I HIGHLY recommend you pick these up, they are exciting page turners.
