Title:  Obsidian

Series:  Lux

Author:  Jennifer L. Armentrout

Published:  May 2012

Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don’t kill him first, that is.

It was unanimous, Kittens:
Ana, Celeste, Christina and Amy all put Obsidian on the top shelf!

Here’s the trailer in case you missed it, or here’s the trailer because you want to watch it again.

♥ The story:  Luxens vs. Arums
Celeste: I was initially like, wha? aliens?  The story is actually really good, and I think it surprised me a few days later while I was still thinking about the book. I was so sidetracked by the romance I forgot there was actually a great plot.
Christina: The concept is pretty badass, I think.  It was neat how it was a play on Light and Dark…good/evil, and how they drew their powers from light/shadow sources. I also enjoyed how they both had weaknesses and strengths.
Ana: I liked that although I wondered why the “dark” wanted to steal the “light” and did they get “light” if they stole enough of it??
Amy: I loved the concept! Light vs. Dark.. very unique.
Ana:  I also loved how they could follow the trace that was left on humans and how where they lived actually blocked the Arum from being able to hunt them.
Amy: Yes.. the trace…the author has a very clever imagination.
Celeste: And the Arums aren’t the only bad guys – I think the DOD is shifty too.
Ana: Yes, true…they’re an enemy too!
Christina: I’m very intrigued by the DOD, and since you haven’t read the scenes for Onyx, I’ll leave it at that.
Christina: As for the story itself, I think it progressed and flowed perfectly.
Ana: Yes, I think it flowed well…the romance built slowly, there was action with the Arum, we got to know the family and fall in love with the characters.
Christina: Otherwise, I would’ve detonated from the UST bomb that was brewing.

Celeste: YES YES Yes, Kitten/Kittycat. Every time I heard it I was DEAD.
Amy: Normally, I’m not a big fan of pet names, but coming out of Daemon’s mouth… YES PLEASE!
Christina: I agree, Amy. I’m not really a fan of pet names, either. But his “kitten” made me squirm. In a good way, of course.
Ana: I normally find pet names like that to be cheesy but because I could hear his snark, I thought it was super sexy! And when he whispered it or said it in a low voice there was something so absolutely naughty about it that I couldn’t help loving it!
Celeste:  I agree, too, about pet names being cheesy. But damn, it was hot as hell.
Christina: Absolutely. While I was reading, I’d have to take a deep breath and fan my cheeks.
Celeste:  Katy pretended to hate it, but we know she loved it too. I think it made her toes curl, in a good way.
Ana: There’s something so intimate about it and she definitely felt it…as did I!!!
Celeste: Yesssssssss! meow.

HIS dirty mouth (zomg, zomg, zomg) and HER dirty mouth
Christina: I fuh-reaking loved the bantering between these two. LOVED!
Celeste: I love that they both were bad. It just sent the sexual tension off the charts!
Ana: Me too…the banter was “easy” between them. They just fed off each other.
Amy: Yesssss!! The bickering/banter between the two was brilliant. Intense. And bold. And Hot. And really funny and intimate at times too.
Amy: I wanted to slap his face then jump his bones! Rawr! TMI?
Christina: No, that’s exactly it.
Ana: Yes, Amy….that’s what I found…the more frustrating he was…the more I wanted him!  I loved her inner monologue too! And, I loved that he just said what he thought too…the “we could have sex” line just killed me.
Celeste: But his douchey-ness (Katy’s term for him)  is why you wanted to jump him.
Amy: I knew that it was coming…leading up to him saying that… about having sex.. I was chewing my hand waiting!

Celeste: I LOVE that she was a book blogger!
Ana: I loved that!
Celeste: I loved her IMM post, Waiting on Wednesday, getting an order of books.
Ana: When she said that her Monday post was a “What Did You Read” post I was rolling on the floor!  She is US!!
Celeste: “I checked my blog post. No comments. People suck. I had 5 new followers, people rocked”
Christina: I loved that! I knew what all the memes were, and I think that’s what helped me connect with her on such a good level.
Celeste: YES. We are soulmates with Katy.
Ana: Exactly!
Amy: LOVED that she was a blogger! Actually I was just excited she was a book lover in general! The blogger bit was a bonus.
Ana: She was sassy too…she had all that inner angst going on, but she didn’t let him see it.
Christina: I also loved that she was so quick-witted, constantly at the ready with a smartass reply. I ate that up.  I love when my heroines have a bit of bite to them, that little bit of spunk and attitude and less of a standoffish, go-with-the-flow vibe.
Amy: I have a soft spot for the “nerdy” type too. But, I also loved how strong her character was as well. Pretty much fearless.
Celeste: Yes. she had a great inner dialogue. Her confidence was great too…not overdone, just right. For example, going for the red bikini – she knew she could pull it off yet she was still nervous…fearless but not foolish.
Ana: I loved when she was making the decision about what bathing suit to wear!
Amy: Exactly. Fearless not foolish!
Ana: Yes…and funny…and she handles weird well.  I think she’s one of my favorite girl characters in a long time.
Christina: She handled it well later. She actually ran like hell at first, which I thought made her later response believable.
Amy: I agree. I was instantly drawn to her from the very beginning of the story.. that doesn’t happen very often for me. She’s definitely one of my favorite females characters.
Christina: She didn’t immediately think, “Oh, big glowing dude that can freeze time. That’s perfectly normal. Let me cuddle him and his sexy body.”

Let’s move onto DAEMON

Describe Daemon in 3 words…what would they be?!?
Celeste: sex sex sex
Ana: lol…Celeste!!!
Amy: Sex. Sexy. Sextastic.
Ana: bwahahaha   #soulmates
Christina: Hmmm, three words.
Celeste: sofa king sexy! I can’t stay away from sexy.
Christina: 3 adjectives: devastatingly sexy, incredibly frustrating, tackle-on-ground smoochalicious (Made up words, FTW!)
Amy: Sexy. Arrogant. Badass.
Ana:  infuriating, devilish, delicious

Feelings about Daemon by the end of Obisidian and after the extras
Celeste: He is actually sensitive, but he knows he needs to be a jerk.
Ana: I feel for him because he doesn’t want to fall for her and he is…and he uses his snark to try to push her away.
Celeste:  But, at the same time he knows his snark turns her on. AND he LOVES to see her squirm.
Ana: Very true!
Amy: Oh yeah. He’s clearly and fiercely trying not to fall for her…
Ana: What he says in the morning after scene just melts your heart!
Ana: I love that all these hot guys have their own language too.  English is so boring! lol  I love angel speak and apparently also alien speak too!  The extras were out of this world!!
Christina: *total creeper breathing* I’d stalk his ass. I’m just sayin’

Daemon and Katy day to day interactions
Celeste: How about his pen poking her in the back during class…so cute.
Ana: That was funny and adorable.
Christina: I loved that. It was something I could picture vividly in my mind.
Ana: He knew it irritated her but I think it was also a way for him to “touch” her.
Christina: And them eye-banging each other. Ate. It. UP!
Celeste: Her friends Lesa and Carissa saw it too… “I bet he wants to poke you with something else.” I couldn’t stop giggling.
Amy: LOVE it! I think it was also a way to remind her of his presence too. Ya know, just to reinforce that he’s there with her..
Ana: Lots of innuendo which added to the UST.
Ana: I love how she was always looking at his lips too.
Celeste: And that he knew she was looking at his lips!
Christina: And that he was always looking at hers, too!

Friends:  Lesa / Carissa /Dee
Celeste: I liked them! They weren’t those annoying bff’s we see so often in YA stories.
Ana: They were great…and they were brought in just when they were needed…they didn’t hang around all the time doing nothing.
Celeste: And giggling…I hate that!  They were perfect.
Christina: I loved that they were both completely different, but compatible to each other, and accepted Katy into their fold easily.
Ana: I must say that I did find Dee a bit creepy early on…with her obsessiveness about wanting to be friends but it all made sense in the end.
Amy: Dee was just desperate for a “real” friend though.. I felt badly for her.
Ana: Yes…but initially, she was a bit stalkerish.
Celeste: She is lonely! She wanted anyone. I think it came from her heart.
Christina: Yeah, I was very sympathetic because she literally craved some kind of outside interaction with someone she didn’t have to be stuck around all the time.
Ana: She knew right away that Daemon was hot for Katy, though…she was trying to make a love connection fairly early on! lol
Celeste: Yes, she encouraged it!!  She is a romantic too, even though she isn’t in love.
Christina: I thought her red dress ploy was brilliant!
Ana: Yes, that was great!!  And I really did like her by the end. She just had to grow on me!

The Luxens
Celeste: How about how the Blacks all had D names and Thompsons all had A names? Did you notice?

Ana: Did you also notice that both sets of triplets were 2 boys and 1 girl.

Christina: Yes, I thought maybe their alien breed had something to do with that for compatibility reasons.
Ana: I did giggle a bit at the twi comparisons…she almost gets hit by a truck…they’re in the woods discussing his real identity, etc. But, he’s way hotter than Edward!!
Celeste: Ha, I didn’t even notice the twi comparisons…I think the romance was so intense I didn’t notice. I was blinded by love!
Christina: I was just thinking, “Damn, I didn’t even realize.”

The Ending
Ana: Loved the ending…she knows what she wants but she’s getting it on her own terms…she’s making him work for it!!!
Celeste: Yes. She wants him but she still fights it. I LOVE!
Christina: I loved that she was all, “Pssssh, boy, you better get with it.”
Ana: I absolutely loved that there wasn’t the old “my life will be nothing without you” ending…she’s still kick ass and if he wants her he’ll have to win her over!! Brilliant!
Amy: I normally love and need a happily ever after or at least some kind of confirmation that the characters will eventually be together in the end but, this book was so different, in such a good way and I loved it. Daemon’s got his work cut out for him.. She’s going to make him work for it. Obsidian is such a fantastic book!

We would like to thank Ms. Armentrout for her genius piece of work
and can’t wait to read Onyx, out Aug 14!
