Title: Scent of Magic
Author: Maria V. Snyder
Publisher: Harlequin Mira
Published: Dec 18, 2012
From the Publisher: Hunted, Killed—Survived?
As the last Healer in the Fifteen Realms, Avry of Kazan is in a unique position: in the minds of her friends and foes alike, she no longer exists. Despite her need to prevent the megalomanical King Tohon from winning control of the Realms, Avry is also determined to find her sister and repair their estrangement. And she must do it alone, as Kerrick, her partner and sole confident, returns to Alga to summon his country into battle.
Though she should be in hiding, Avry will do whatever she can to support Tohon’s opponents. Including infiltrating a holy army, evading magic sniffers, teaching forest skills to soldiers and figuring out how to stop Tohon’s most horrible creations yet; an army of the walking dead—human and animal alike and nearly impossible to defeat.
War is coming and Avry is alone. Unless she figures out how to do the impossible … again.

but that did not influence the review**
I always love starting with the trailer
Celeste’s review: 4.5 stars Noooooooooooo! It can’t end like THAT. Gah, but it did. Excuse me while I sit in the corner and clutch my heart.
♥ The Story Telling: Amazing, amazing, amazing. Maria V. Snyder has the talent to take such a complicated story and build it up layer by layer in a way that is so effortless to read. The plot wasn’t simple, yet it was so easy to follow….it was fabulous! I was so excited to leap into this book after Touch of Power and this book did not disappoint. I was immediately transported to another world, this time, the 9 mountains in the 15 Realms. The war continues for the power struggle as so many want to control all the Realms.
♥ The Heroine and Hero:
Avry is just so damn strong. Both emotionally and physically. In the first novel she always did what her heart told her to, in this installment she seemed to own those feelings even more. I adored her before, but now I really loved her after spending so much time with her. Not only is she a healer, but she is quite good with strategy and can rival the best of them, such as Ryne and Tohon. She aligned herself with people that may seemed unsavory, but she was always one step ahead in her thinking. I found I couldn’t wait to see what she would do next.
Kerrick Le sigh. He is brilliant. He comes close to getting defeated so many times, but he is so strong in so many ways that he keeps living and outsmarting his enemies, even when the situation seemed so dire. (thank goodness because I had to restrain myself from blowing through the pages to find the reunion).
♥ The Secondary Characters: I can’t even list them all since there are so many….but don’t let that overwhelm you…you will get to know them all quite well. Then you will love them, laugh with them, cry with them…..and maybe want to strangle some of them.
♥ Double crossings: HOLY CRAP. I love them and this book had epic ones! *zips lips*
♥ The POVs: Very cool…it alternated from 1st person (my favorite) told by Avry and 3rd person about Kerrick. I loved it. It gave 2 perspectives, but in a more unique way than just alternating back and forth.
♥ The Romance: What? A romance bullet point for a fantasy novel? YES because anyone who knows my reviews knows I am a sucker for romance. While it is a fairly absent in this novel that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. What I’m trying to say without spoiling anything is that the romance side of me was still satisfied in this installment. While I love a good kissy scene I know there wasn’t really time for it here, but the possibility is what kept me going.
♥ The ending. So many things got tied up, but at the same time so many possibilities came to light. Oh, and that major cliffhanger…..
♥ Rec it? YES! If you love fantasy this series is for you. If you aren’t a fantasy fan this will be the series to change that. While I did enjoy the first book a teensy bit more, this one still had me sucked in from page 1.
About the Author: Maria V. Snyder changed from being a meteorologist to a novelist in 1995, when she began writing to keep her sanity while raising two children. Since then, she has published numerous freelance articles in magazines and newspapers, and teaches fiction-writing classes at the local college and area libraries. The classes give her the wonderful opportunity to encourage fellow writers, and to keep improving her craft.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maria always had a fascination with big storms. Dreaming of chasing tornados, Maria earned a bachelors of science degree in meteorology at Penn State University. But she discovered, much to her chagrin, that forecasting the weather wasn’t one of her skills. In order to chase tornados you had to predict where they might form. Creating fantasy worlds where she has complete control of the weather was more agreeable to her.
Maria’s research on food-tasting methods with an expert chocolate taster, her husband, turned out to be a delicious bonus while writing Poison Study.
Maria has a brown belt in Isshinryu Karate, and enjoys playing volleyball and the cello. Traveling in general and via cruise ship in particular are her biggest distractions from writing. Maria has traveled to Belize, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal.
Maria lives with her husband, son, daughter and yellow lab, Hazelnut, in Pennsylvania where she is at work on more LUNA novels. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in writing popular fiction from Seton Hill University.
