Title: A Matter of Fate
Author: Heather Lyons
Published: August 30th 2012 by Cerulean Books
Chloe Lilywhite struggles with all the normal problems of a typical seventeen-year-old high school student. Only, Chloe isn’t a normal teenage girl. She’s a Magical, part of a secret race of beings who influence the universe. More importantly, she’s a Creator, which means Fate mapped out her destiny long ago, from her college choice, to where she will live, to even her job. While her friends and relatives relish their future roles, Chloe resents the lack of say in her life, especially when she learns she’s to be guarded against a vengeful group of beings bent on wiping out her kind. Their number one target? Chloe, of course.
That’s nothing compared to the boy trouble she’s gotten herself into. Because a guy she’s literally dreamed of and loved her entire life, one she never knew truly existed, shows up in her math class, and with him comes a twin brother she finds herself inexplicably drawn to.
Chloe’s once unyielding path now has a lot more choices than she ever thought possible.
Ana will put A Matter of Fate on her second shelf!
My Review: What if you knew you were a Magical but no one would give you the information you needed to fully understand it? And what if, even with this lack of information, people continuously told you they had great expectations for you? What if your parents were cold and distant and your friends tried to help but even they only knew so much? What if Fate had mapped out your entire life and taken away your ability to decide things for yourself? What if that boy you dreamed about for years turned out to be real? And what if you fell in love with his twin brother when deep down you knew you loved him as well? Easy, right? I think not! Welcome to Chloe Lilywhite’s life!
This book hooked me from the very beginning. Jonah shows up in her class and immediately Chloe is thrust into complete confusion. Add to that the fact that Kellan, his twin brother, is the one she connects with immediately and things get even worse. The tension is palpable! I felt for her predicament and I liked that she still kept her spunk and her energy. Each time life threw her a curve ball in this book, she figured out what her next step was and barreled forward. Jonah and Kellan were great characters…twins that were alike and different enough to be engaging. Now, of course, I have a favorite and this book served only to break my heart over and over because of the situations he found himself in. But that’s the beauty of this story…all the emotions were there! I wasn’t at all bothered by the love triangle in this story because it sort of made sense to me from the beginning and, in the end when I got additional information, it was crystal clear. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t like that my guys was hurting, but I understood why.
The secondary characters were very well written as well. I especially loved Karl. He wore his emotions on his sleeve and he became Chloe’s big brother of sorts…looking out for and protecting her. The cousins were great as well, each with their unique personality and role to play in this great story! I thought their individual storylines were important in this book as well and, even though I didn’t always agree with their actions, I knew they always had the best intentions.
Now, before you discount this story as simple a love story, think again. This is a story of a girl who needs to rise to her full potential in order to save those she loves and the magical world. The romance is nicely balanced with some very well written action. There are twists and turns and mysteries to solve and, of course, there’s emotions to deal with. So the book moves quickly in parts and then, in turn, slows for the emotional turmoil of the romance. I must admit that I found the ending to be a bit slower than I would have liked, it could have ended without as much detail, but that did not in any way change how I felt about this book. It was a great read and I’m really looking forward to the next book!!
