About the Book:

Just breathe, Kacey. Ten tiny breaths. Seize them. Feel them. Love them.

Four years ago Kacey Cleary’s life imploded when her car was hit by a drunk driver, killing her parents, boyfriend and best friend. Still haunted by memories of being trapped inside, holding her boyfriend’s lifeless hand and listening to her mother take her last breath, Kacey wants to leave her past behind. Armed with two bus tickets, twenty year old Kacey and her fifteen year old sister Livie escape Grand Rapids, Michigan to start over in Miami. Struggling to make ends meet, Kacey needs to figure out how to get by. But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle anything—anything but her mysterious neighbor in apartment 1D.

Trent Emerson has smoldering blue eyes, deep dimples, and perfectly skates that irresistible line between nice guy and bad boy. Hardened by her tragic past, Kacey is determined to keep everyone at a distance, but their mutual attraction is undeniable and Trent is determined to find a way into Kacey’s guarded heart—even if it means that an explosive secret could shatter both their worlds.

My Review:  When I finished this book, I was exhausted…in a good way!  I had felt all the feelings that were possible to feel and I had missed sleep and risked being fired because I couldn’t put it down.  This is a story about hope, anger, forgiveness, sadness, redemption, love and, most of all, life.  More specifically, living life after tragedy strikes.

Kacey feels like she’s drowning.  Her life changed four years ago after a car accident took the people she loved most but somehow spared her.  Her sadness and her hatred of the drunk driver who did this to her are palpable.  Left with her young sister to care for, she makes it a point to breath…simply breath…in order to get through the days.  But it doesn’t always work.  She’s still very broken and has built up a wall to protect herself from others.  When she and her sister, Livie, move to Miami, her life takes yet another turn.  She meets Storm, her feisty next door neighbor and Trent, the mysterious guy living in 1D who, it turns out, is fighting his own demons.  These characters are very well written, all with great depth to them.  They didn’t always behave like I thought they would but they spoke to me and captured my heart.  I thought I knew who Storm would turn out to be but I was wrong.  I thought I understood what Trent wanted and I was wrong.  These character surprised me every turn of the way and I loved how their relationships developed.

This story leads us through a journey as Kacey and Trent (and even Storm) encounter tough situations, make difficult decisions and learn whether they’re capable of trusting again.  It puts broken people together and dares them to help each other heal.  There’s an interesting twist here as well…one that may make you reconsider your feelings for a certain character.  In all honesty, I did figure it out before it was revealed and this was the only point that had me torn in terms of a rating.  But in reality, it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book because once the truth came to light there was more to it than I had guessed.  Overall, this was a captivating read with good pace, great writing and the ability to take me on a roller coaster ride of emotions…what more could I ask for?!?
