Title:  Deadly Kisses

Author:  Kerri Cuevas

Published:  March 2013

Aiden Grant is seventeen, has a killer kiss, and a boss who used to be President, back in the old days. You see, Aiden is a grim reaper and his kiss welcomes the newly dead. But Aiden’s pleasant grim reaper lifestyle is in jeopardy. And it’s not only because Honest Abe keeps throwing out history lessons with reaping assignments, just to confuse him. It’s because Aiden’s next assignment is to reap the soul of Bee, the only girl he has ever loved.

When Aiden’s kiss of death fails, intertwining their souls, Bee is still very much alive and they are both in trouble. The ancients want Bee, who has special powers of her own, and they’ll do anything to get her.

Some rules are meant to be broken—even if that means Aiden must bargain with his own soul to save Bee. Who knew the afterlife could get so complicated?

Ana will put Deadly Kisses on her third shelf!

My Review: Aiden died with regrets and now he’s a grim reaper.  Bee has a few secrets of her own but she’s alive and well…for now anyway.  Unfortunately, she’s Aiden’s next job.  He’s got to prove himself as a reaper and that means reaping Bee’s soul.  The problem?  She’s the only girl he’s ever loved and he doesn’t know how he’ll be able to make himself take her life.

So, what does this mean for the reader?  Well, it means you need to be prepared for some emotion.  Aiden is torn between doing his job which, coincidentally, he’s quite good at, and saving the girl he loved while he was alive.  Add to that the complication that Bee is wanted by other reapers and he’s got quite a challenge on his hands.  I really enjoyed Aiden’s character.  He’s battling his own demons and regrets yet he’s willing to do whatever is necessary to save Bee because, even though he never told her how he felt while he was alive, his love for her is strong.  He has a strong voice and he’s a smart character.  At first, I wasn’t sure about Bee but she definitely grew on me.  She turned out to be a sassy, strong girl who knows what she wants and is good with “wierd”…after all, figuring out that Aiden is a grim reaper hardly has her batting an eyelash.  The secondary characters, Bee’s brother and Abe Lincoln (who happens to be Aiden’s boss) were also fun characters.

The world that the author built was intriguing.  Learning about how someone became a reaper and understanding how they lived was fascinating.  As a matter of fact, I would have loved to learn more about this world.  It would have been really interesting to spend some additional time in their world.  Overall this was a fun, quick read with characters you’ll enjoy and a world that’s different from those I’ve seen recently.  My assumption is that there will be a second book in the series where we’ll learn even more about this world and get to explore Aiden and Bee’s relationship further and I look forward to that.

About the author:

Kerri Cuevas was born and raised in Rhode Island. She moved to New Hampshire with her husband, three kids, cats and a rabbit named Hercules in 2005. When she’s not writing, she’s chasing chickens on her small farm or searching for the ultimate mac-a-cheese recipe.

Kerri went to college for Early Childhood Education but now writes books for young adults full-time. Her storytelling stems from watching too many horror flicks as a teen, but she no longer needs to sleep with the lights on.
