From the Publisher: So what’s the game now? This, or the life I used to know?
When Miki Jones is pulled from her life, pulled through time and space into some kind of game—her carefully controlled life spirals into chaos. In the game, she and a team of other teens are sent on missions to eliminate the Drau, terrifying and beautiful alien creatures. There are no practice runs, no training, and no way out. Miki has only the guidance of secretive but maddeningly attractive team leader Jackson Tate, who says the game isn’t really a game, that what Miki and her new teammates do now determines their survival, and the survival of every other person on this planet. She laughs. He doesn’t. And then the game takes a deadly and terrifying turn.
**I received an ARC from the publisher
but that did not influence the review**
First Thoughts: Holy cow that was good!! I devoured this book. But how can it be over????
Plot, Setting, Pacing and Style: The plot…well this was like nothing I have ever read before. I’m not a gamer, but you don’t have to be to get into this. While it’s like a game, the incredibly scary part is, it’s reality for these kids. Miki is pulled from her life, thrown into a “game”, and put on a team led by the hot and cocky, yet tight lipped Jackson Tate (more on him later). Their mission is to defeat the Drau, the awful and frightening aliens. Miki has no choice but to join in, follow directions, and try to survive so they can save the world.
The setting was pretty awesome! It varied depending on where the team got pulled to. What, you don’t understand? You will have to read to find out.
The pacing and style were perfect, and built up beautifully. At first I had no idea what was going on. At all. But then again neither did Miki and we saw everything through her eyes. It made me feel as confused as she was, except my life wasn’t on the line! We got fed just the right amount of detail along the way which built the story up to be pretty intense. The style was so easy to read, which made it so hard to put down! The words flowed off the pages.
The MCs: Miki, Jackson, and Luka. I loved all of them.
Miki has felt lost ever since her mother died and she tries to go on with her life as best she can. She and her dad are doing what they need to do, and she knows she is moving ahead, but when she is pulled into the game her world is flipped upside down. While so confused, Miki still plows forward, knowing she has no choice but to do her job. She also has spunk and isn’t afraid to ask questions….lots of them. She was definitely a kick-ass heroine.
Jackson was so confident, so arrogant, and always had to have the last word (I loved that about him). Not to mention he is totally hot with guns that “ought to be licensed”. RAWR. Oh, and to complete the bad boy image he always wears shades, so he has that extra mystery. No one ever got under his skin until Miki Jones. Their chemistry was undeniable and I couldn’t get enough.
Luka, Miki’s longtime friend was solid, someone she could trust to have her back. (I wouldn’t mind a novella about Luka, Ms. Silver!)
Romance /Chemistry: For Miki and Jackson it was more than just physical attraction and just clicking with each other. There truly was some type of paranormal draw they had to each other. The build up was AWESOME. Just the right amount of breath by the ear, whispers, standing close and I LOVED it.
Title/Cover: Oh, the prefect title is so perfect. When I saw it in context of the book I just smiled and highlighted it on my kindle. I don’t want to spoil for anyone, but it truly fit the book perfectly. The cover is visually so pretty….but take a closer look and you can see the levels of the players. Yes, it’s genius.
Twists and Turns: The whole thing was a twist and turn and had me guessing. I truly never knew what to expect and I freaking loved it. I love being surprised and I basically got a whole book full of surprises. WIN!
Ending: EVE, HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME? Yes. If that wasn’t clear it was a massive cliffhanger. NOT A STAND ALONE BOOK I NEED MORE I NEED MORE I NEED MORE. thank you!
Gripes/Suggestions: So this is a 5 star book hands down. But, if I have to have a teensy gripe it was the insta love. Not the chemistry, but love. Yes, the professions were more at the end, but it was still too soon for me. An “I need you” would have worked better. Or “I’m falling in love”. I guess I just take the whole “I love you” declaration pretty seriously.
Final Thoughts/Rec it? YES, a million trillion times YES.
