Summary from Goodreads: Sean looked out over the lake, squinting against the sunlight. He turned to me, his expression sobering as his eyes flicked over my face in a silent study.

“Come on Amy, I saved you once, I’ll save you again.”
I met his stare unflinchingly. “I don’t need saving.”
A wicked grin formed slowly. “Don’t you?”

After a rebellious summer night that almost claimed her life, Amy Henderson – the Onslow publican’s only daughter – is sent away to suffer a fate far worse than any other punishment:

Boarding School.

Three years on, a now nineteen-year-old Amy returns to Onslow for the summer. What once was a cauldron of activity with live bands, hot meals and cold beers, the Onslow Hotel now lies dark, deserted and depressing. All fond childhood memories of loitering on the hotel stairs and eavesdropping on customers’ colourful conversations are in the distant past.

How had her dad let it come to this?

With the new threat of putting the Onslow up for sale, Amy reluctantly turns to a local tradesman for help: Sean Murphy, the very same Onslow boy who saved her life all those years ago. With his help and that of some old friends, the task is clear: spend the summer building the hotel back up to its former glory or lose it for good.

In an endless summer, Amy soon realises that sometimes in order to save your future, you have to face your past, even if it’s in the form of a smug, gorgeous Onslow boy.

Average Goodreads Rating (*as of 07/18/2013): 4.41

Christina really liked Book 1. You can find her second-shelf-rated review for it HERE

  • Christina thought this second installment was a great summer read. It goes on her second shelf. To read my review and learn more about the author,

**Special Note:** An eARC of this title was provided by the author/publisher for review purposes during the blog tour. However, that did not influence this review in any way. All quotes and opinions will be of this version and not from the published edition.

The Lowdown: After one teenage night of idiocy brought about by alcohol and a friend’s crush, Amy’s brush with death landed her in an All-Girls’ Boarding School and three years spent away from her favorite seaside town. Now 19 years old, going “home” for the summer sounded like the perfect getaway from her parents to Amy until she arrives and finds her beloved hotel and bar a rundown mess. When her dad has his own brush with death, it’s decided that the Onslow will be put up for auction. Amy decides that her and the hotel aren’t going down without a fight and she’ll do anything humanly possible to restore the bar to its former glory. However, hotel renovation is nowhere near her forte, so she reluctantly accepts help from the very knowledgeable, capable Sean Murphy, the very guy that saved her those three years ago, as well as the other Onslow boys.

My Thoughts: I said at the end of my review of The Boys of Summer (review here) that I couldn’t wait for this second installment because it featured Sean, who I loved loved loved in the first book. Luckily for me, his character may have grown up over the past four years, but at the heart of him, he’s still the lovable cocky goof that I fell so hard for in the first place. It was Amy who ended up surprising me, though. In the first novel of this trilogy, I found her to be the typical annoying and bratty sixteen-year-old teenager. And though she’s still relatively young in this novel, her character grew leaps and bounds by the end. I felt like a proud momma bear watching her little cub grow up.

As for the writing, it was much of what I expected from Ms. Duggan. She still fastens her story with an honest approach and real-to-life characters that make you feel very much a part of the book. Her prose is pretty, simply because its layered with raw truth and clear imagery that pulls you into each scene and keeps you tethered to the emotional turmoil of the characters and the plot as a whole.

[Sidenote for US readers: Duggan, being an Aussie writer, does use a good bit of Australian lingo in her dialogue and such. However, it wasn’t hard to figure out what it was supposed to mean given its placement within the sentence-structuring and how it was used.]

Swoons: Sean is swoony. He may come across as cocky, but he layers it with humor. I love him. *le sigh*

Verdict: You should read this novel, even if its only to gobble up Sean and his tastiness. This was the perfect contemporary novel to put me in the best mind-space for summer. I only wish I had my own lakeside town infused with good friends and the smell of salt in the air. It was good to catch up with all the Onslow Boys and their significant others. I can’t wait to see what That One Summer (Book 3 of the Summer series) has in store for us. With a tag-line of It will be that ONE summer where EVERYTHING changes. , I can can only bounce on the edge of my figurative seat with anticipation until 2014.

Though the Summer series is labeled as a “trilogy,” each book can be read be as a stand-alone, and I appreciate that more than I can say.
