Illusion. Power. Identity.

Tensions are reaching a fever pitch everywhere Kendra Irisavie turns.

As the body count rises, pressure also grows to shift the tides of war. The sondaleur is on the hunt, but tracking the Aquidae leader is the greatest challenge she’s ever faced. With the Shadow playing a deadly game of obsession and horror, Kendra’s best chance to win is to unravel a tangled web of deception spanning back to the origins of the elemental world.

Nothing is what it seems and the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her pursuit for answers becomes.

When the unthinkable happens, Kendra must decide if survival is worth the sacrifice.

Conflicting loyalties, fierce passions, and irrevocable choices ignite in the electrifying third installment of the Ondine Quartet.

My Review:

There’s nothing that can equal the excitement of reading a series that just keeps getting better and better.  This third book in the Ondine Quartet does just that.  It left me exhausted, excited, anxious and, for the first time in this series, completely heartbroken.  What a rollercoaster ride!!

I’ve always felt that the world-building in these books was very creative and I enjoyed the time spent in Haverleau.  But, I never imagined we’d be treated to spending time in the Selkie Kingdom.  The opportunity to see the place where Tristan comes from and experience what it’s like to live there was amazing.  This new world left me captivated!

Kendra continues to be a strong, fierce character.  She’s matured so much and welcomes the challenge of not only being the Sondaleur and a Chevalier, but also the future Governor.  This world is at war and she rises to the occasion each and every time.  Tristan is as charming and brave as ever…and maybe even more dedicated to Kendra’s safety if that’s possible.  Their interactions are wonderful and their relationship, although completely impossible, continues to grow…and, well…let’s just say you might enjoy the new developments.  Of course, I was also pleased to see the usual cast of secondary characters stepping in and stepping up to help Kendra.  These are some very loyal friends!

Now, let’s get to my heartbreak (because this is all about me after all…lol).  Oh, Julian.  The circumstances of the world he’s living in and the impossibility of getting what he wants has changed him…he’s no longer the playful, endearing character we’ve grown to love.  And I fear for him.  I fear that he will be unable to live with the burden of fighting a war and losing what he desperately wants.  I have a lump in my stomach that won’t go away until I read the final book…and, even then, I fear the lump will simply move from my stomach to my heart.

This book is filled with adventure, heroes, evil, romance, sadness and, yes, even heartbreak.  The storytelling is rich and the characters are vivid.  You should definitely pick up this series not only because I know you’ll enjoy it, but also because I have a feeling that I’ll need someone to hold my hand when the last book comes out next year!
