Summary from Goodreads: When a storm strands Claire Hanlin in Chicago on Christmas Eve, the last person she expects to come to her rescue is Logan Dawes, the man she almost married two years ago. The chemistry between them is dangerously potent, but with nowhere else to go, Claire accepts Logan’s offer to stay with him for the night.
Back in the home they shared, surrounded by reminders of Logan and his young daughter, Claire begins to realize how much she misses the family she almost had. After a few cups of Christmas cheer, she falls right back into her ex’s arms-even though she knows it means setting herself up for heartbreak all over again.
The magic of the season has thrown him together with the woman he’s never stopped loving, and Logan’s not about to pass up this gift. He’s not the workaholic he was two years ago-his family comes first. Now all he has to do is prove it to Claire, before the snow stops and she flies out of his life for good.
Average Rating on Goodreads (as of 12/04/2013): 4.88
- Ana and Christina both agree that this novella was swoony and over much too soon. To find out their shelf rating…

♥ The Lowdown: Claire Hanlin hasn’t been back to Chicago in over two years and for good reason. It houses too many memories, a majority of them pleasant and others not so much, from a time that she was mostly happy and planning a future with a good man and his young daughter. But like any relationship, it didn’t come without its bumps in the road. When Claire had needed Logan the most, he hadn’t been there and it ultimately brought about the breaking of their engagement.
When a business trip that was supposed to have her in and out of the city before she could bat an eyelash leads to her being trapped there because of a snow storm, a chance encounter at the airport lands her face-to-face with the man that she’s tried to make her heart forget. With no hotel vacancies in the area, Claire reluctantly accepts Logan’s invitation to stay at the home they once shared together until the storm passes.
Claire’s heart stutter-steps its way through the next few days, spurred on by the longing of what could have been with all the reminders of her previous life with him surrounding her. Logan isn’t making it easier on her either. He’s not one to look a gift-horse in the mouth and turn away. He sees this opportunity for what it is, a second chance, and he’ll be damned if he lets Claire walk out of his life for a second time.
♥ Christina: First, I would like to just take a moment to appreciate Brighton’s picspiration for Logan “Hot Single Dad” Dawes.
*appreciating…appreciating…still appreciating…still appreci–* Ahem. So, he’s pretty, right? If you’d like to see other pics that inspired her while she was writing this novella, you can find those on her HSD Pinterest Board here.
I was a pre-reader for this story, so admittedly, I have a strong connection to this novella and its characters; however, it is my complete, unbiased opinion that this is one of the best novellas that I’ve ever had the great pleasure of reading. Brighton Walsh definitely knows how to entice her readers with witty dialogue, emotional writing, vivid imagery, and exceptional characters development, even in a limited number of pages. It was easy to see how Claire never fell out of love with Logan and how being around him only made her yearn for the life that should have been hers all along. Logan was headstrong and determined in his career life, but easily swaps those traits for swoony, attentive, and passionate when it comes to interacting with Claire and his daughter. Not going to lie, my heart pitterpatted uncontrollably during all the scenes that we’re given with him and his adorable seven-year-old, Sophie.
Speaking of swoons, here’s a little excerpt to pique your interest further:
Despite his promises of no inappropriateness, he still pulled her to him, tucking his knees behind hers, her back to his chest. With his hand spread wide across her stomach, he whispered in her ear, “Just want to hold you.”
–quote taken from my eARC of Season of Second Chances, pg. 58
My only issue with this book is that I didn’t want it to end. With an epilogue that perfectly suited the conclusion to Claire and Logan’s tale, make sure you check out Season of Second Chances to bring a little seasonal joy to your life as it inspires you to believe in the possibility of second chances and an everlasting love.
♥ Ana: 4 stars! This was a sweet and sexy, quick read. It’s a story that begs the reader to grab their favorite beverage and a cozy blanket, dive right in and forget about the world for a couple of hours. Of course, as a novella, it’s over way too soon! The characters are well written and even in such a short number of pages, I grew to love them…especially Logan. After all, what’s not to love about a hot single Dad?!? The plot of the story is not earth shattering, you’ve probably read something similar before. But that will definitely not curb your enjoyment…it didn’t for me anyway. The writing is smooth and the story packs an emotional punch. It’s all there…confusion, happiness, sadness, anger, love and lust and the reader is treated to it in a steady stream. This is a perfect read over the busy holiday season…it’s short and fun…I think you’ll enjoy it.
Brighton Walsh is a storyteller at heart. Whether through words or pictures, she’s been weaving tales for as long as she can remember. After decades of cultivating her writing, she finally decided to give life to the voices in her head and set forth to write her first novella. Love is her first love, and writing about it is a dream come true. When she’s not overwhelmed by the incessant chatter in her mind, you can generally find her with her nose buried in a steamy book or partaking in some retail therapy. The setting of her life story takes place in the Midwest, characters including her very own real life hero she found in her supportive and swoony husband, and her two energetic kids who (fortunately) know nothing about the naughty things she puts down on paper.
