Jag and Celeste put this on their 2nd shelf (4 stars)

The Cover
Jag:   The cover, have to say, it’s hot.  I definitely like it more than the cover of the first book Elite.  I do however have one beef, Nixon is a serious tatted bad boy and this cover just doesn’t convey that to me…it conveys romance and desperation but lacks the danger that this book is all about.
Celeste:  I freaking love this cover. It’s desperate and intense, but I have to agree with Jag…where are Nixon’s tatts?!?!

First Impressions
Jag:  First off I adored, ADORED the first book in the series and had really high hopes for the second book.  I have to say that story wise, Elect lived up to those expectations but I’ll be honest, I was disappointed on a few fronts.
Celeste:  Elite was one of the best books I’ve read this year and I absolutely could not wait for this installment. It threw me right back into the intense action as soon as it began, but I decided to go back and reread book 1 a little bit to make sure I captured that chemistry between Trace and Nixon. It was that chemistry that made me fall so in love with this story in the first place.

What We Loved
Jag:  I’ve always been a fan of Rachel Van Dyken’s writing, she has this way of pulling you into her worlds and making you live and breathe these characters and their lives.   As a fan of the well-written, well-developed love triangle, I absolutely loved watching Trace & Chase’s (yep it rhymes) friendship, relationship, whatever you want to call it, develop.  I also loved getting a chance to learn more about some of the other characters, including the villainous Phoenix. I think this was enhanced, on all fronts, by the alternating POVs from the various characters, which at times could get confusing if you read fast like me lol
Celeste: I loved so many aspects of this story about the mafia, from all the messed up betrayals to the epic romance to the huge cast of secondary characters. There were double crossings and rats like you couldn’t predict, and it showed me how cruel and crazy their world was. This book really let me get to know some of the secondary characters with the multiple POVs, and I loved that! I never, ever would have thought I would like another one of the bad guys, but I really understood him and actually really ended up liking him.

What We Didn’t Love
Jag:  So at times, I felt like there was too much focus on the Mob side of things and not enough time spent on the relationship between Trace and Nixon.  My only other critique is that this book was pitched to me a New Adult book and honestly I think it’s more of a mature young adult.  This is not a bad thing at all because the story is great, I just think expectations need to be tempered in terms of what you are going to read.
Celeste: I needed more romance! I know, I know, it was life and death, and Nixon needed Trace like he needed air, but I wanted a few kisses that made my toes curl and I never got that. Their relationship in the first book was crackling and sizzling off the pages, and there had never even been any sex. This book just didn’t give me any love with fireworks, and I was sad because Ms. Van Dyken can write romance like no other. There were definitely scenes that could have been elaborated on, but just weren’t and I felt a little empty. I also didn’t like the hint at that love-triangle. I’m not a fan so I just needed the part with Chase to be over. Don’t get me wrong, I love Chase, so I will be excited to see where his own story goes.

Would We Recommend This
Jag: In a heartbeat, without a doubt, Rachel Van Dyken is a gifted writer and story teller and this series is well worth your attention.
Celeste: If you love organized crime stories and romance, this is a must read for your list! There’s never a dull moment and you will meet characters that you will fall in love with.
