Title: Keep You From Harm
Author: Debra Doxer
Published: September 25, 2013
Genre: Mature YA/NA Paranormal Romance
They weigh you down. I’ve kept a secret all my life. It’s my mother’s secret, too. I inherited it from her along with a unique ability that only we possess. She’s gone now, another victim of addiction. If her death isn’t enough to bring me to my knees, her betrayal flays me to the bone. Because the secret my mother and I have been keeping is just one of many she’d kept. She never told me I have an older brother. And now he’s here, eager to be my guardian.
There is no one else. So I move across the country to live with this stranger, my brother. But experience has taught me that most situations are temporary and forming attachments only leads to hurt in the end. That’s why I’m determined to keep to myself in this new place, struggling to seem aloof while I’m quietly breaking apart.
Then I meet Lucas…
His magnetism is hard to resist, and most girls at school aren’t resisting. I don’t fall so easily though, especially not for guys who use their good looks as a weapon. From the start, our interactions are tense and volatile. I know it’s because I’m denying the unwelcome desire that grips me when he’s near. I think he feels it, too. He looks at me with an intensity that threatens to unhinge my resolve. Soon he’s trying to break through the walls that past hurts have built.
But I’m not what I appear to be, and it wouldn’t be fair to get involved with him. At least that’s what I tell myself. Until a terrible act of violence reveals that Lucas has a secret, too. It’s a secret that links us together and ties us to an evil history I could never have imagined.
**I received a copy of this book from the author,
but that did not influence the review**
First Thoughts: 5 stars Holy crap this was good. Dark, gritty, and full of secrets…this book is why I love my paranormal romances! I feel sorry for whatever book I start next because Keep You From Harm was pretty epic.
Plot, Pacing, Setting, and Style: Raielle had to move across the US to live with her brother. She didn’t really want to go, but she had no one else, and no other choice so she made the best of it. She brought her secrets with her and had no expectations for a normal senior year. However, the first time she saw Lucas Diesel all those thoughts went out the window. This is the story of her secrets coming out, and how it affected so many people. This was such a well woven story and I’m so upset that I don’t have book 2 now!
This story was told from Raielle’s POV (but I looked on the author’s website and book 2 is Lucas’s POV SQUEE), and the pacing was phenomenal. I was absolutely addicted to this story.
Main Characters: So one of the many reasons this book is a solid 5 stars is because I loved both MCs. I wanted to be Raielle and Lucas is HOT!
Raielle is so unbelievably selfless, and not in an immature clueless way. She genuinely is such a good person and makes choices that I could only strive to make. I really loved and connected with her.
Lucas is pretty much my favorite type of book boyfriend: brooding and cold. He had his game face and I think I went all tingly every time he showed it. The reader thinks Raielle is the only one who is “damaged goods”, but Lucas had some serious baggage too, which is why he was so detached sometimes…and I loved it.
Romance/Chemistry: Holy crap, YES. The kisses were amazing, the touches so gentle and full of sparks. I might combust just thinking about it. This story definitely has some angst going on, but I feel like Ms. Doxer won’t let us down. This is an NA story, so it has sexual references but it really went with less is more, and my god, it worked.
Title/Cover: I love this title. The more I read the more I understood it. The cover is haunting. It’s wild. It’s kind of a hot mess. It’s totally Raielle.
Twists, Turns, and Secrets: Whoa, YES. I still have more suspicions, but for all you secret lovers out there, this is chock full!
Ending: Ms. Doxer, if this story wasn’t so good I might hate you! Holy cliffhanger!!
Gripes/suggestions: It needs another round of editing. But it really didn’t bother me AT. ALL However, I know some people will be grumpy with this story because of it. I wish everyone could just enjoy it, but to truly push it through to the next level it needs another edit.
Final Thoughts/Rec it? A million billion times yes. this story was so good, this author is so talented at creating a web of characters and plots that is so refreshing. You won’t be disappointed.
