About the Book:

What if all the legends you’ve learned were wrong?

Brutally attacked by one god and unfairly cursed by another she faithfully served, Medusa has spent the last two thousand years living out her punishment on an enchanted isle in the Aegean Sea. A far cry from the monster legends depict, she’s spent her time educating herself, gardening, and desperately trying to frighten away adventure seekers who occasionally end up, much to her dismay, as statues when they manage to catch her off guard. As time marches on without her, Medusa wishes for nothing more than to be given a second chance at a life stolen away at far too young an age.

But then comes a day when Hermes, one of the few friends she still has and the only deity she trusts, petitions the rest of the gods and goddesses to reverse the curse. Thus begins a journey toward healing and redemption, of reclaiming a life after tragedy, and of just how powerful friendship and love can be—because sometimes, you have to sink in the deep end of the sea before you can rise back up again.

Ana will put The Deep End of the Sea on her top shelf!!!

My Review:   You think you know Medusa?  So did I.  Stories taught me to dislike this mean character who turned people to stone.  They taught me she was a mean and evil creature until she was, thankfully, beheaded.  Boy…are the stories wrong!  In this incredible retelling, we learn her history and are taken inside the head and heart of this misunderstood mythical being.  And…gasp…I loved her!

In this version, Medusa detests her fate and is filled with regret.  She’s saddened by what happens around her and is always vigilant to keep it from happening again.  She’s gentle and tortured and I immediately cared for her (although, in truth, I tried desperately to keep from imagining the slithering snakes on the head thing…what can I say…I’m squeamish! lol).  The more I found out about her and her struggles, the more I loved her.

And, speaking of love….sigh….Hermes!!  If you know about mythology, you know he’s not one of the gods we think of as swoonworthy.  He’s quite often looked at as a bit of a fool.  But, once again, Heather shows us that things may be different than what we believe.  This Hermes is strong, caring, sweet and committed to Medusa.  In other words…completely drool-worthy!!  Their relationship is a slow burn, the kind that makes you smile and bite your lip and has your heart skipping a few beats.

The addition of other gods to this book was wonderful as well.  Hades, Persephone, Aphrodite, Poseidon…they’re all part of Medusa’s story.  They’re a huge dysfunctional family and Heather takes care to help us see them as more than what we already know.  This is quite often wonderful but, sometimes, we learn things we don’t like.  And it all makes for a well-rounded book!

Ultimately, this is a story of strength, of new beginnings, of altering fate and going all out to reach your dreams.  This is a story that teaches us that nothing is impossible or set in stone (pun intended).  It’s filled with hope, and love, and everything that your heart could want.  It’s a story of discovery and of reaching for happiness.  So, what are you waiting for…go read it…now!!
