Title: Going Down in Flames
Author: Chris Cannon
Published: June 2014
If her love life is going down in flames, she might as well spark a revolution.
Finding out on your sixteenth birthday you’re a shape-shifting dragon is tough to swallow. Being hauled off to an elite boarding school is enough to choke on.
Since Bryn is the only crossbreed at the Institute for Excellence, all eyes are on her, but it’s a particular black dragon, Zavien, who catches her attention.
Zavien is tired of the Council’s rules. Segregated clans, being told who to love, and close-minded leaders make freedom of choice almost impossible. The new girl with the striped hair is a breath of fresh air, and with Bryn’s help, they may be able to change the rules.
At the Institute, old grudges, new crushes, and death threats are all part of a normal day for Bryn. She’ll need to learn to control her dragon powers if she wants to make it through her first year at school. But even focusing on staying alive is difficult when you’re falling for someone you can’t have.
Ana will put Going Down in Flames on her top shelf!!
4.5 stars!! It’s actually been a while since I’ve read a YA paranormal story. And what a great way to get back into the genre! This book was everything I hoped it would be…wonderful characters, an interesting setting filled with both good and evil, twists and turns and mystery, and, of course, dragons!
This story starts with a bang. And, although this is jarring and doesn’t give us much time to get to know the characters, it works here. We’re immediately thrown into a world that no one, not even the main character, expects. Just before her 16th birthday, Bryn discovers that she’s a dragon. And, not only is she a mythical creature, she’s also the child of two types of dragons – blue and red – something that’s never happened before. Her learning curve is steep and she’s not given much time to absorb the news, but this leap into the story allows us our first peek at her strength. Bryn is feisty and intelligent and a fighter. I love that about her! She’s always thinking steps ahead and her inner monologue is quite humorous at times too. And these characteristics make her the perfect hero because readers are not given even one moment to breath before the story takes off and the adventure begins. Bryn faces all types of hostility and prejudice because of her unusual lineage but she’s brave and resilient time and time again.
There are a few other characters who also won my heart. Clint and Ivy, two dragons who look beyond her differences and become her friends, are warm, funny, and they balance Bryn’s character nicely. Zavien, the reluctant love interest, is dreamy and I really need to know more about him. He’s the perfect mix of mysterious and sexy. And then there’s Jaxon. He’s Bryn’s arch nemeses but he’s quite intriguing too…I may actually find him more than interesting…but we’ll leave it at that for now!! lol
I’m really hoping this is the first book in this series because there is so much more story to be told. Dragon society is rooted in old fashioned beliefs and Bryn has an uphill battle if she’s to help change that. Her enemies have plans for her and they’re not going to stop just because I’ve read the last page. And, don’t even get me started about the budding romance…I need to know more!! So, I’m hoping that Ms. Cannon is hard at work on the second book because I definitely need more Bryn, Zavien and Jaxon…soon!!
