Title: Rules of Survival
Author: Jus Accardo
Published: June 2, 2014
Genre: New Adult Suspense
Synopsis: If you want to survive, you have to follow the rules…
Mikayla Morgan is wanted for her mother’s murder. She’s been on the run for almost a year now, avoiding not only the police but the real killer. Tired of running and desperate to clear her name, she breaks one of the most sacred rules: never return to the scene of the crime.
Every bounty hunter on the Eastern Seaboard is after the Morgan girl—but Shaun Denver and his partner snagged her. She’s a piece of work, and Shaun can’t decide if he wants to kiss her or kill her. When things take a sharp turn south, Shaun does the only thing he can think of to keep her close—he handcuffs them together.
As the danger mounts and the killer closes in, the chemistry between them threatens to explode. Shaun and Kayla will need to break all the rules if they hope to get out of this alive.
**I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher,
but that did not influence the review**
4 stars I need to lay down after reading that! My heart is still beating a million miles a minute. I’ve read Jus Accardo’s books before and loved them, but this suspense novel was a great change of pace.
Kayla was on the run after being framed for her mother’s murder. When she ended up handcuffed to one of her bounty hunters things quickly got complicated. From the blossoming romance to the ability to slip away, everything was intensified, but not necessarily in a bad way.
The romance was good, I always love the push and pull feeling when both characters are attracted to each other, yet hesitant to commit. It wasn’t what kept me reading though, it was the chase and the suspense that had me flipping the pages. While there was definitely a love story woven throughout, that part was more of a good back burner storyline for me.
The amount of twists and turns in this novel were craaaaazy. And for the record, I love twists and turns. So just when I was saying A-ha! Ms. Accardo threw something else at me and I was back to scratching my head and rethinking things…and I couldn’t get enough. Well done!
What could I have see more of? Little things. I was desperate to have Kayla and Shaun brush their teeth. What? That’s right. They were filthy and did catch a shower or two, but there was no teeth brushing so I don’t know how they ever kissed. I’m a picky reader like that. I need to know those things.
The story was told from Kayla’s POV so I know what Shaun looked like (HOT!), but I would have loved for Shaun to have spoken about what Kayla looked like to him. He obviously thought she was pretty and told her she very special, and the romantic in me would have loved to hear out loud all the ways her physical beauty was attractive to him too. I know, I’m a greedy reader like that.
The ending wrapped up nicely, and still threw more curveballs at me. I felt all warm and fuzzy and was delighted as to how it all turned out.
Would I rec this? Absolutely! It was a fantastic page turner that you won’t want to put down.
