Title: Six of Hearts
Author: L. H. Cosway
Published: July 26, 2014
Genre: new adult, romance, mystery
Synopsis: Step right up and meet Jay Fields: Illusionist. Mentalist. Trickster.
I think in triangles. You think in straight lines.
I show you a table and make you believe it’s a chair.
Smoke and mirrors, sleight of hand, misdirection. I trick and deceive.
But most of all, I put on a good show.
The world thinks I killed a man, but I didn’t. Bear with me. It’s all a part of the plan.
Revenge is what I want. I want it for me and I want it for her.
I want it for all six of us.
She doesn’t remember me, but she’s the reason for everything. She’ll be my prize at the end of all this–if I can hold onto my willpower, that is. Maybe I’ll slip up a little, have a taste, just a small one.
So go ahead and pick a card. Come inside and see the show. Look at my hands, look so closely that you can’t see what’s happening while you’re so focused on looking. I’ll be destroying your world from right here in the spotlight.
You’ll never see me coming until it’s too late.
I’ve only got one heart, and after I’ve pulled off my grand deception I’ll hand it right to her.
So, sit back, relax, and let my girl tell you our story. You’re in for one hell of a ride.
5 stars Look. At. That. Cover.
That cover pretty much sums up the book: hot sexy confident man clouded in mystery. Gimme gimme. And then there’s the title. Oh god, the perfect title is perfect. And the synopsis? It grabbed me from the first line…it made the book irresistible and I pretty much bought it right after I read it. I’m sitting here typing this as I bask in the post 5 star book read glow. It’s a thing, trust me.
The #1 reason you want to read this? The dirty talk and the sexual tension. That’s right, it’s all so intense and insaneeeeee. The naughty innuendos and way the author wrote Jay and Matilda’s body language was scorching. I’m pretty sure I could feel the heat radiating off my kindle. And that’s before anything happened…so much angsty build up is my favorite.
You want more details? Well, I can’t spoil but there was this one time….Sweet. Lord. Baby. Jesus. That lip bite before anything fresh happened was so crazy hot. I can’t even. *clutches heart* Jeeeeeezus. That is all. I need a moment before I can continue with the review. OR maybe I just need a moment to go back and reread that highlight.
Let’s talk about the MC now. I lusted over and absolutely loved Jay. He was confident, strong both physically and mentally, he was witty, he was smart. AND HE WAS A DIRTY TALKER FTMFW. Yes, right there is where he stole my heart. He was also fiercely loyal and protective of Matilda. It was romantic and sexy. It was perfect. But I will admit this, while Jay was perfect there was one teeny tiny thing that irked me…he kept saying “darlin'”…and that was wrong. Jay isn’t southern. No one from Boston says it. And he was 12 when he left Ireland. I think it’s possible to still have a trace of an Irish accent, but certainly not a southern accent. So that didn’t sit right with me, but I got over it because… well, he was Jay Fields and you just get over that kind of thing.
This book wasn’t all sexy talk and mystery though. It also had hilarious parts. I loved some of the serious laugh out loud times as the banter was beyond entertaining. Loved it!
The secondary characters were ok….they were a good backup cast but I didn’t have any burning desire to hear more of their stories. They weren’t bad, just no feelings either way. Both Michelle and Jessie were loyal, but sometimes they were over the top…but at least it was absolutely entertaining (and sometimes hilariously outrageous with their commentary).
There was a mystery till the end, it was fantastic. I knew who I didn’t trust, but I didn’t know why and I loved that all the pieces came together. Ms. Cosway is brilliant, and she knows how to write a story that gives you a little at a time so there’s no way you can put the book down.
The ending was good…surprising (OMG!), intense in parts, and sweet in others. Just the right amount of each and I couldn’t be happier.
Lastly…I’m a huge spoiler phobe. Quite possibly the biggest one out there. I don’t read teasers and I don’t like synopses or reviews that give away the plot. I know, I’m high maintenance in that department. So here, the biggest surprise in the story was after the end. The spoiler phobe in me died a little, but it was too late and I saw who the next book was about. While I like who it is about, and I have ALL THE QUESTIONS…I would have rather gone into the story a bit blind. However, I’m starting the book as soon as I finish typing up this review.
Rec this? A MILLION TIMES YES! If you love a smexy romance with a great mystery that will keep you guessing this is a must for your TBR. My first LH Cosway book, but not my last (I already bought my next one ;))
