An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible. Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both. Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

A story filled with secrets, drama, and romance that captured my imagination and my heart from the very beginning!

This book has been sitting on my kindle for such a long time and, for some reason, I kept putting it off.  Maybe it’s because I’m not a big fan of motorcycle club stories in general or maybe it’s because I wasn’t sure how it could be done well as a YA.  But, let me tell you…I shouldn’t have been concerned about either of those things.  The writing here is fantastic.  Ms. McGarry’s ability to paint a picture of a world so different from the one I live in, one I didn’t think I would really enjoy, and yet still draw me in from the very beginning was a wonderful surprise.  Her characters felt real, their struggles touched my heart and I felt their concerns as well as their happiness in my own heart.

Overall:

I loved Oz and Emily and really liked that both of these characters experience growth during this story.  Emily starts off pretty scared of a lot of what she’s seeing and experiencing in life but, as she learns more about what may have happened in her past, she becomes feisty and strong.  Oz is desperate to join the motorcycle club and feels like his life is all planned out before him but, as his relationship with Emily becomes stronger, he begins to see that there might be other options.  Oz is strong and smart and sexy.  He wants to be seen as fearless but begins to realize that you’ll always feel fear when those you love are in trouble.  I love how he interacts with the secondary characters in the book and I really like that, whether he wants to or not, he tends to be ruled by his big heart.  The romance here is a slow burn and, even though this is a YA story, the chemistry still feels mature and gets your heart beating faster.  There are several story lines that play out here and each one of them was gripping.  I’m hoping that we see some of these characters in the other books in the series.

Bottom line…I love when I’m surprised by a book and this one definitely did that for me.  Although I may not run out and read a motorcycle club story by another author, I know that I will continue this series by Katie McGarry.  And, lucky for me, the second book is already available.  I’m very sure that her characters and their stories will definitely continue to keep me entertained and I can’t wait to see what she’s got in store for me next!
