When the loveliest of publicists from Macmillan reached out to me, asking me if I wanted to participate in the blog tour for the final installment of The Remnant Chronicles, I couldn’t reply fast enough. (In all actuality though, it took me a while because I was too busy dancing around my living room and fangirling like a nut, but once I calmed down, my fingers couldn’t fly fast enough.)

Before I get into my interview question, let me remind you quickly about this final book, yes?

TWO-PART QUESTION FOR MARY: With so many bloggers that have grown tired of love triangles, was there anything that you tried to do differently to make readers fall for both guys and win over those love-triangle haters? As an non-objective third party with no vested interest in the outcome of the love triangle, which guy do you “ship” with Lia most?

I admit, I did try to win over interest in both guys, but not for the purpose of a love triangle. By hiding their identities, I gave the reader a chance to see beneath their superficial labels—just like Lia did. If she—or we—had known immediately who was the prince, how would that have changed our attitude about him? Or what about the Assassin? If we had known who he was, how would that have colored how we felt about him and who we thought Lia should be with?

We all have our preconceived ideas about what a prince or assassin should look or act like. We assign certain traits to each, and attach ourselves emotionally to certain types. What if we tend to always go for the good guy, or what if we always root for the bad-boy? What if both young men were actually a bit of each? I wanted to shake it up a bit and examine stereotypes. In all my books I’ve always explored our notions of good and bad, right and wrong, and brought the overlapping gray areas into focus. That is what I did with these books too.

As for who I ship with Lia? I don’t. I love both of these guys—truly I do. I’d be happy to see her with either.  What matters is who, ultimately, she sees herself with. That’s what’s important. It is all about choice and Lia deserves to make her own. In fact, choice–and lack of it–is a driving force behind the whole series. I am always #TeamLia.
