Emilia

They say love and hate are the same feelings experienced under different circumstances, and it’s true. The man who comes to me in my dreams also haunts me in my nightmares. He is a brilliant lawyer. A skilled criminal. A beautiful liar. A bully and a savior, a monster and a lover. Ten years ago, he made me run away from the small town where we lived. Now, he came for me in New York, and he isn’t leaving until he takes me with him.

Vicious

She is a starving artist. Pretty and evasive like cherry blossom. Ten years ago, she barged into my life unannounced and turned everything upside down. She paid the price. Emilia LeBlanc is completely off-limits, my best friend’s ex-girlfriend. The woman who knows my darkest secret, and the daughter of the cheap Help we hired to take care of our estate. That should deter me from chasing her, but it doesn’t. So she hates me. Big fucking deal. She better get used to me.

God, I FREAKING LOVED THIS. Oh man oh man oh man did I love this. I know, I need to calm down so I can actually write a review about how much I loved this. First, I loved the chemistry (holy hotness!). Next, I loved the characters and their darkness. Who am I kidding, I also loved the characters and their lightness. The writing style was simply superb; words flowed, relationships developed and all of a sudden right before my eyes a whole world was born. Now, full disclosure here – there were a few things that got me a little wiggly, but god, the writing was just so good I’m only going to knock off half a star because this book still needs to round up to a 5 star rating on GR and Amazon.

When a book is a real winner for me it’s because it had the power to take me away and pull me into its world. This story did that. I think it started with the main characters. Both Vicious and Emilia at first glance seemed to have their roles carved out, but were actually so complex. Vicious more so, as his past was anything but kind. From the outside his old money would appear to have given him a life of privilege, but he was so broken and that made him so angry….and I could not wait to see how Emilia was able to make him whole. In the end she just had to be herself and it was her strength that made him stronger in the end, even though he seemed like the strong one in the beginning.

The romance was everything. All of it. It was sexy. It was complicated. It was full of hurt and healing. It was naughty. But best of all it stole my heart. I loved it. I know what else you want me to mention…dirty talk. OMFG how could I not have mentioned it already? Sweet lawd baby Jeebus on steroids this dirty talk is DIVINE. That is what made the sexy times good. That slow burn of physical desire. Ms. Shen, I love you for writing this book and Vicious and his filthy mouth.

But it didn’t end with the awesomeness of Vicious and Emilia. The secondary characters were equally good and these 4 guys were best friends, brothers in a way, but the ugly times were as bonding as the good times. There was a rich history and (messed up?) loyalty that I had all kinds of crushes on. Also…there has to be a book about Rosie and Dean. Yes?? Please? I sense something. I also wouldn’t mind Trent or Jaime’s stories either. Please and thank you, I will be reading every book in this series.

So now, my wiggly moments with the book. Please know these are eensy bitty and tiny, but I’m mentioning them all. Issue #1 was Vicious’s way of speaking – that sexy dirty talk and level of maturity when he was in high school. It just didn’t ring true. Maybe for a man that was more mature as we saw later in the book, but for the flashbacks to high school….no. However, I got over it pretty darn fast because he was all that.

Next, the cover. Please know I love the cover. I studied that mofo. But dammit, it’s not accurate. Vicious does smoke blunts, so maybe he is smoking a joint there and not a cigarette? He didn’t smoke cigarettes. Beyond that though the guy’s chest is on the cover is perfection and I didn’t see any defining scars…

Lastly, the letters. That was so extraneous and irrelevant and took away from the way Vicious and Emilia’s relationship was established. It showed they had more of a past and changed things for me. So I did what any normal reader would do (ok, not any normal reader, but me and my weird self) I skipped ALL THE LETTERS. If I beta read this book I would have said to take them out. TOTALLY my 2 cents, not a deal breaker but no added value.

The ending was amazing. My heart sang and I loved it. I got to roll around in the happiness and bask in its swooniness. I finished this book and I felt good. Really good. And so excited for the next book, whenever it comes out, which I hope is wicked soon.

Rec this? YES!! Especially if you have a thing for broody cranky men who find happiness…and also if you have a thing for dirty talkers. I loved this and I hope you do too!

Happy reading!
