With her past haunting her, Gwen Taylor shut herself off from every relationship she ever had.

But her lonely existence comes to an end when she moves to Beauforde, a small mountain town in Colorado. And when she meets Colton Underwood, a businessman and amateur boxer.

Their attraction is consuming, and soon even Gwen can’t deny her growing feelings toward Colt or the fact that their affair is anything but casual. But, even as she comes alive for the first time in years, her past threatens to destroy everything.

Drowning with guilt over a something she cannot change, Gwen must face her fears before it all catches up to her.

I don’t know why, but every so often when an author reaches out I like to take a chance. As I started this story I braced myself for a nail biter as well as an emotional rollercoaster. However, as soon as we got to present day neither of those things happened. The story was a good idea, but I feel like it needed to be fleshed out more in order for me to have loved it. I liked it enough, but could see all the places it could have been better.

First, I *think* the author is English or Irish. There were quite a few things that gave it away. While it doesn’t matter, it was inconsistent with a character that was born and raised in the US so in turn Gwen came across as less genuine. I think with a quick edit that could all be fixed though. No one here uses a mobile, and no one’s phone is disengaged. Those are 2 things off the top of my head.

The chemistry for Colt and Gwen was there, but I was still itching for it to grab me more. The same with her friendship with Heather. All of it happened too quickly so it didn’t feel organic. I also didn’t know if Gwen was beautiful to Colt, or just a conquest. I wish he had verbalized some of that. However, I did like all the characters, but it felt very surface-like.

The crux of the story is Gwen and her past, and that it will come back to end her. I could understand that she would be very scared from her father, but the worry of present day danger was not real to me. If her dad was in jail she would have absolutely known if he was up for parole or escaped. So the constant looking over her shoulder was hard for me to accept. I didn’t have any worry of that.

The cover…I know, I know I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover and I’m not exactly doing that. The photo is fine, but it’s stretched / distorted weirdly and bugged me. I absolutely didn’t hold it against the book as I still wanted to read it, but it still was noticeable to me.

Rec this? Maybe. If you want a quick read that is still enjoyable even though you know where it’s going. I would still read another book by the author, I think she has potential even though this one didn’t really strike a chord with me. Good luck if you try it!

Happy reading!
