From the #1 New York Times bestselling author duo of The Royals and When It’s Real comes a sensational new novel about a girl falling for the one boy she should never have met…
Beth’s life hasn’t been the same since her sister died. Her parents try to lock her down, believing they can keep her safe by monitoring her every move. When Beth sneaks out to a party one night and meets the new guy in town, Chase, she’s thrilled to make a secret friend. It seems a small thing, just for her.
Only Beth doesn’t know how big her secret really is…
Fresh out of juvie and determined to start his life over, Chase has demons to face and much to atone for, including his part in the night Beth’s sister died. Beth, who has more reason than anyone to despise him, is willing to give him a second chance. A forbidden romance is the last thing either of them planned for senior year, but the more time they spend together, the deeper their feelings get.
Now Beth has a choice to make—follow the rules, or risk tearing everything apart…again.

This story is about the ultimate in forgiveness…being able to forgive someone, even if they can’t forgive themselves. Beth is dealing with the death of her sister, the overprotective need of her parents to keep her from the same fate, and the misguided help from some of her friends. When she meets Chase, he’s like a breath of fresh air…someone who doesn’t know who she is or what she’s gone through. Someone she can be herself with. But, after she finds out that Chase was involved in her sister’s death, she is immediately torn between how she should feel and how she really feels. And that’s when we see the next element of this story…it’s also a tale of strength. Beth’s struggle to deal with the judgement of those around her while still staying true to her own feelings brings a delicious angst to this story.
Chase has served his time, he’s paid the price…but he’s not ready to forgive himself and he’s willing to accept the blame and contempt from others as added punishment for his guilt. However, Chase has a good heart. He’s truly sorry and, deep down, wants to be happy. But it’s difficult for him to take the next step in his life because he doesn’t feel he deserves it. Chase won my heart just like he won Beth’s. He brought so many feels and so much reality to this story and I loved him right from the very beginning. Together Chase and Beth have huge hurdles to overcome and, at times, she’s the only one rowing them towards the future. But her strength and his big heart lead them forward in a world that, ultimately, wants to push them back.
I loved this story and these characters. It’s incredible to me how the author is able to put so much feeling and heartache, so much love, hopefulness, and joy into a young adult story. These characters shouldn’t have lived this much, they shouldn’t have experienced this much, and they shouldn’t be so mature. But they are…and its an amazing ride to their happily ever after.
